St. Louis University: Global Warming

SLU Participates in National Teach In About Global Warming - 02/08/08

Chilly temperatures and falling snow did not deter Saint Louis University students and professors from warming up to the idea of environmental responsibility. On Thursday, Jan. 31, members of the SLU community participated in a nationwide teach-in about global warming and related issues.

As part of Focus the Nation, a national educational initiative on global warming, forums were held simultaneously at more than a 1,000 colleges, universities, high schools and other institutions.

At SLU, a panel of experts presented the latest scientific information about global warming and discussed its ethical implications. A representative from a student group striving to enhance environmental awareness at the University also was on hand.

William Dannevik, Ph.D., chairman of the department of earth and atmospheric sciences at SLU, explained the greenhouse effect and discussed some of the ways scientists keep track of the Earth's temperature. Thomas Valone, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, discussed how climate changes affect people and the environment.

Tobias Winright, Ph.D., assistant professor of theological studies at SLU, shared what the Catholic Church is saying about global warming. Winright teaches a course at SLU called "Green Discipleship: Theology and the Environment."

"While in the past the Catholic Church emphasized only the soul and spirit, today it has recovered the sense that 'matter' matters and that we need to be good stewards of the environment," Winright said.
