George Washington University: Global Warming
GW President Signs Climate Commitment - 04/17/08
On April 17, 2008, President Steven Knapp signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. GW became the first university in the District of Columbia to sign the pledge and joins more than 500 signatories nationwide.
According to official the GW press release on the event, President Knapp said "Signing this pledge is just one sign of GW's commitment to transform our own institution and to collaborate with the District of Columbia and other partners in addressing this urgent local and global challenge.
We are proud to be the first university in the District of Columbia to join universities around the nation in this important initiative."
The Presidents Climate Commitment reinforces the unique responsibility that institutions of higher education have as role models for their communities and in training the people who will develop the social, economic, and technological solutions to reverse global warming.
This action complements the work of GW's ongoing Presidential Task Force on Sustainability, on which E&EM Lead Professor Jonathan Deason serves. The Task Force is examining the university's operations and academic programs in the areas of environmental stewardship, climate change, and university policies.
